The Curious Case of Mang Meliton Zamora

My heart goes out to Mr. Meliton Zamora a.k.a Mang Mel, a retired janitor in the University of the Philippines.
Mang Mel has been a janitor at the University of the Philippines for 45 years and was a guarantor for several UP student loans during his employment. After he retired, a sad reality has fallen into him when he found out that he would only get 90 centavos as a retirement pay as a result of the deduction he got every time a student failed to pay their loans.
Here’s my message to all the students who have become a guarantor of Mang Mel and wasn’t able to pay back:
Have a heart with your school janitor who has given you sincere concern during your financial troubles
I am also calling the attention of my friends in the blogosphere. Cyberfriends, let us also help Mang Mel by spreading his story within the blogging community. I can definitely say that Mang Mel has a heart of gold and he is indeed one in a million! God bless you Sir!

that’s a reflection of how one’s loyalty is (un)rewarded here in our country!
(hay naku, tumaas na naman yata ang bp ko)

It was the pay he got from GSIS..yung 90 centavos…UP in fairness is reviewing his case, titignan daw yung mga leave credit pay.

Snow, I think this was clarified by UP admin that only one student failed to her loan. And the amount of money deducted from him was the result of him using his leave pay. Anyway, Something must be done to help Mang Mel. I do believe those former student whom he was able to help are planning something to help him.

Pero based po dun sa inquirer video, several students daw po. I have a colleague in the office na nag-confirm na he becomes a guarantor for several students daw po. Sana nga po ma-resolve soon.
