Bb. Pilipinas 2009 Pageant Winners

Bb. Pilipinas 2009 Winners

Last Saturday night, (March 7, 2009) Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant has proven to be a competition of mestizas as 2 out of the 3 major winners are of mixed ethnicity. Listed below are the winners of the 45th edition of the beauty contests:

Pamela Bianca Manalo is Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2009. The 22 year old flight attendant won the right to represent the Philippines at Donald Trump’s Miss Universe Beauty Pageant in The Bahamas. One of the crowds favorite, Manalo was also a runaway winner of numerous minor awards namely Best in Swimsuit, Miss Natasha Products, Miss Philippine Airlines and Miss Manila Bulletin Choice Award. She was crowned by the last year winner, Jennifer Barrientos.

Marie-Ann Umali is Bb. Pilipinas-World 2009. A Francine Prieto look-a-like, Fil-Lebanese Umali clinched the right to represent the country at the London-owned Miss World Beauty Pageant in South Africa. The 20 year-old Umali is a model and a student at DLSU-College of St. Benilde. She also won two important minor awards namely Best in Long Gown and Miss Photogenic. She was crowned by Danielle Castano, Bb. Pilipinas 2008 1st runner-up who replaced Janina San Miguel the last minute in the Miss World Beauty Pageant 2008 in London, UK.

Melody Gersbasch is Bb. Pilipinas-International 2009. The Fil-German doll-like beauty will represent the country in the Miss International Beauty Pageant which will be co-hosted by Macau, China and Tokyo, Japan this year. She was crowned by the last year winner, Patricia Fernandez.

Richell Angalot is Bb. Pilipinas 2009 1st runner-up. A crowd favorite since the start of the pageant, she also won 3 special awards namely Miss Natasha Beauty, Gateway Shopper’s Choice Award and Miss Talent.

Regina Hahn is Bb. Pilipinas 2009 2nd runner up. The oldest candidate among the bevy of this years beauties, Hahn was the dark horse winner in the Top 5. I personally, find her the brainiest of the bunch.

Barbara Salvador, April Love Jordan, Priscilla Mae Honorio, Diana Arevalo and Vanessa Johnson completed the round-up of semifinalists. Gizelle Jasmin Rivamonte was adjudged Miss Friendship and was the only minor awardee who did not reach the Top Ten semifinalists round of the pageant.

  • Pageant fanatics favorite Carishiela May Kuijpers (an Estee Lauder Model Search Winner), Priscilla Navidad (Pinoy Big Brother’s Deaf Mute Beauty Queen) and Abegail Lesley Cruz (Bb. Pilipinas 2007 2nd runner-up) were the major upsets of the evening as they failed to land in the Top Ten.
  • Though hailed by the pageant enthusiasts as the most competitive since Charlene Gonzales’ batch (1994), the 2009 interview portion was quite unforgettable since as Manalo (Universe), Gerbasch (International), Arevalo (Top 10 finalist), Angalot (1st ru) and Hahn (2nd ru) were the only good conversationalists. The rest were…oh well…
  • MAJOR BOO-BOO: No one can deny that Marie-Ann Umali (World)) is stunning but her interview portion is a mixture of disappointment and skepticism as it was one of the worst in the evening. It was simply dreadful as it was somewhat a de ja vu of Janina San Miguel (resigned Bb. Pilipinas-World) in 2008. Though her answer is not as embarrassing as Janina she looked shocked and stuttered twice while justifying her answer to the panel of judges.

This wraps-up my final report on the recently concluded Bb. Pilipinas 2009 Beauty Pageant folks. Undeniably, I am only 2/3 pleased of the results because I really can’t believe again that they have picked the same kind of winner for Miss World Pageant. I mean, what are they thinking?

Anyway, congratulations to the winners and may you make the country proud this year!

    Reply from Snow
My lucky number is 1 as I was born in January and I am always striving to be the best in the things that I can do. And for me, striving to be the best is the representation of number 1. Being in the 1st place too means a lot to me as a person and as a blogger.

Lovely ladies, indeed and kudos to them for winning! I have to echo your sentiments on Umali and her obvious lack of articulation. It’s SAD. Having lived in the States for over thirty years, I have to be honest and say that I stopped watching these pageants due to the overwhelming disappointment that presents itself when the contestants answer their respective questions. In previous years, these pageants have become nothing but all beauty and almost no brains type of competition! Sure, it takes guts to go up on that stage, it takes guts to compete but c’mon…can’t the Philippines produce both beauty AND brains, like they used to? Can’t they have contestants and winners, for that matter, who can articulate, clearly, the answers to what seemingly are very simple questions? Umali, sure she’s a stunner — but if she’s failed in her response at the national level, who’s to say she won’t do the same at the international level? Mga kapwa-Pinoy, there’s so much more to our women than their pagkamestiza, pagkaputi and pagkatangkad…there has to be substance and brains, diba? Hay naku…we still have a long way to go. What message is this conveying to the younger Filipinas?

    Reply from Snow
Very well said Miss MCCP. Very well said… :(

  17. Chaka Khan says:

Pilipinas-World Marie-Ann Umali. Na-explain naman niya ng maayos-ayos yung favorite number niya. Though not mahirap, it was a make or break answer. Tapos naka-breakeven siya. ;)

@Chaka Khan – Actually, I feel somewhat the sameway Chaka pero alam mo mukhang promising naman yang mga winners compared last year. :)

  19. Chaka Khan says:

  21. Rommel says:

I believe that there’s a strong batch in 2005 with Carlene Aguilar, Precious Lara Quigaman and Gionna Cabrera as winners. :)

So 1994′s not that much for me. Haha.

    These years winners? Will lose.
