Martin Nievera and the Lupang Hinirang
Nievera Sings Lupang Hinirang?
The Pacquaio vs Hatton boxing match maybe over but watching and listening Martin Nievera belting the Philippine National Anthem song over and over again in You Tube made me want to question his integrity as a singer! Oh my gulay, what the world is he thinking while singing the Lupang Hinirang, huh?
Honestly, I would like an explanation on why he did the following:
1. First he sing it a-la ‘pop’ version! Who told him to sing it on untraditional manner? Manny Pacquiao???
2. While I appreciate he did not sabotage the lyrics, he happily revised naman the tempo of the song. Goodness gracious, why?
3. And lastly, it appears to me that he is having a concert while belting the song inside the ring. Now I wonder, is he really singing the song for the country or for himself?
Given the fact that Martin did not attend any school in the Philippines since we all know that he was raised abroad, I still do not think that he should revised the ‘Lupang Hinirang’ just like that. He should have consulted any composer-friend for goodness sake.
Heller Martin, you should have phoned Ryan Cayabyab! I bet he would be very happy to help you out!
To Mr. Nievera: Please be reminded that the Las Vegas ring is not a concert stage. Please, next time, sing the ‘Lupang Hinirang’ with pride and sing it right!

im not into pop.. and i can say that his version is NOT that pop.. the thing that made it pop is its accompaniment..
I will say, that those singers who sang in a boxing ring before didn’t sing the anthem in original or the way it is written.. Even Regine’s of Kyla’s version is different.. Singers are entitled to do revisions on their performances and made a name on it.. Martin just performed a version that people wouldn’t like..
Well… I think the Lupang Hinirang performance was better than the Star Spangled Banner..

There is a law prescribing that the correct rendition of the national anthem. The issue is not about the creativity but respect and due recognition to the compositor and patriot who shed his blood along with the others so that this country would sing our anthem with pride, under our own independence and not in the grasps of the colonialists.

Kaya mag-ingat ka sa pagbitaw ng salitang INUTIL dahil di mo alam kung sino ba ang inutil sa komentaryo dito o hindi. At wala ka posisyon na magsabing INUTIL ang mga tao dito dahil hindi ikaw ang nagpapakain at nagpapa-aral sa mga tao dito. Intiendes?
Maari mong sabihin ang opinyon mo, kahit di ka sang-ayon sa iba dito. Pero wag kang magsasabi na INUTIL ang iba dito sa pagdating sa musika o interpretasyon ng batas etc.

martin should have known the law. RA 8491 Sec 37. “The rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe”
maybe he just followed the american way of rendering their national anthem in so many versions. this isn’t allowed under RP laws. but even if we disagree with this law, citing musical creativity, etc…., it is still the law.
now, can martin be charged for violating the law, specifically the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”?

martin had his fault, that is for sure…but to those who are throwing stones at him especially those lawmakers who are wanting to file a case against him, this is all that i could say: HYPOCRITES!
I didn’t like how Martin sung Lupang Hinirang din. Ibinirit nya pa yung last part, ano ba yun.
Sana next time si Lea Salonga naman pakantahin ni Manny.

Ows common guys. Haven’t you heard other countries’ anthems sung differently too? Take the US national anthem, it’s been sung in several worse and un-patriotic ways too in the boxing ring. And besides, if what you’re saying (that Martin knows this is gonna cause a controversy) is true, then all of us have been acting just the way Martin expected us to. We’re so predictable and so easy to exploit.
One good thing that came out of this is that our pupils/students are now being re-oriented into the proper way of singing the Lupang Hinirang. Thanks Martin for straightening out a whole generation of Filipinos’ view of the National Anthem.

For the last time, artists should stick to the original composition of the national anthem. Parati na lang binabatikos yung mga singers pero ayan sige parin.
Malas ni Martin Nievera, sa kanya yung pinakamalakas na reaction. Siguro dahil pinaka-obvious yung modification niya nung kanta. Hindi na rin sana humaba yung debate dito kung inamin niyang mali yung rendition niya at nag-apologize. E hindi e. Nagmayabang pa at ininsulto yung mga ayaw sa kanta niya.
Martin thinks he was cool when he changed the national anthem’s beat na parang pang-metro pop. To make matter worse, he said sorry sarcastically by insulting those who got offended as people who cannot accept change. Sana si Lea Salonga na lang ang pinakanta. Lea knows better not to change the original beat of the national anthem. Kung sa national anthem ng amerika ginawa iyon ni Martin siguradong tapos siya sa stupidity niya. Kaya siguro maraming babaing hindi makatagal diyan. Ang ugali ay arogante. Ang yabang!
hello… you have a point there since the national anthem was sang for the sole purpose of honoring the boxer’s country not to please anyone. As he said in an interview, “i think many people liked my performance.”
first of all it was not supposed to be a performance
second, the people don’t have anything to do on how he sings as long as they can pay honor to our country. but what happenned is they all watched him sing.

“i did it how my son wants me to do it” this was the very word martin said on an interview… well i did not know that he’s so clue less about the meaning or national anthem and why there is a national anthem. he did not know that the national anthem is not written for him to satisfy his NONE-FILIPINO SON’s wishes…
i like him as a singer… but the way he sang the Lupang Hinirang is way too much of a performance… he is singing for the crowd and for his name not for the honor of the country…. “so please don’t let him sing again, two lessons is enough to learn from this man, he’s seeking too much attention… he sang it with cap the first time and he sang it with disgrace the second time… well done for dishonor…
