Jyoti Basu: Indian Communist Patriach Dead at 95
RIP Jyoti Basu
Jyoti Basu died today in Kolkota, India at 11:47am local time after a prolonged illness.He was 95 years old.
Basu, a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was the West Bengal Chief Minister for 23 years. The charismatic leader also almost became the Prime Minister of India twice in 1996, but he had to decline due to opposition from within his party.
Born in 1914 in Kolkata, Jyoti Basu became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in June 1977 and created a record for being the longest serving Chief Minister of the CPI-M. He only stepped down from the post due to health reason in November 2000.
